Twas a spooky night in Autumn. Jenny, a local barista, was driving her father’s ol’ pick-up truck down a dirt road. You see, her usual drive home was abruptly changed thanks to some jerk thinking it would be hilarious if they set a TWELVE-FOOT-TALL SKELETON up in the middle of the road and cement its feet into the street. She had her windows down, crisp, chilly air whipping about her hair as she belted out the latest pop bop along with the radio.
It wasn’t a hard drive, and it’s one that she had done every so often, especially when she needed to clear her head after a day full of taking Karen’s highly specified drink orders.
.. then something caught her eye out in the darkness. While driving past a freshly culled cornfield, movement stirred. Was that a scarecrow? She heard a shriek towards the treeline. Before she could gasp, something lept out into the road, causing her to swerve and plow right into the open field.
BOOM! Thudrllllll…. crap. One of the tires popped, and the truck wobbled to a stop. Not only that but then the radiator decided to give up the ghost, and steam poured out from underneath the hood.
She reached for her bag, grabbed her phone, only to realize… no service.
Jenny knew two things; the first, that her dad wasn’t going to be happy about the truck, and two, her life just became a horror movie cliche.
/scene.
Hello, my dah’lings, and happy 1st day of the #13DoH2020! Today’s look is some amalgam of a cute and yet slightly creepy Scarecrow Gal.
I hope you enjoyed my little story. No, I have no clue why I decided to add it, only merely that it is SPOOKY SEASON, and I can. Muwah ha ha ha ha!
I am so excited, albeit a bit nervous as well, for this year’s 13DoH celebrations! I’ve got some pretty interesting looks up my sleeve and have decided to lean hard into creating full outfits with most looks as well.
I’ve gotten several comments over the years that my Halloween looks are too complicated, so why not get the party started with a VERY, technically simple look.
One word: simple! This “character” is very much pulled straight out of my closet or the closest Goodwill. Scarecrows are simple: flannel and a straw hat, with the optional bibbed overalls. The details are in the makeup and whether or not you want to tape bits of straw and burlap to your person. I thought about doing that bit, but honestly, just thinking about straw and burlap makes me itchy. The outfit is very much “look-in-the-closet-and-see-what-we-can-throw-together” for those quick, last-minute Halloween obligations.
This look is very Zoom friendly for those of you out there attending socially-distant Halloween festivities, and it’s tame enough for your kid’s Fall Festival… but for the love of pumpkin spice, MAKE SURE YOU WEAR A MASK and STAY SAFE! (… thank you for coming to my TEDtalk)
Pro Tip: Use what you have, product-wise, whether it’s just eyeshadows mixed with setting spray, or in a pinch – contact solution. If you want to make a colored, cream blush try mixing some clear lip salve (or moisturizer) with the eyeshadow shades of your choice. My favorite combo for a DIY cream blush is by using Farmacy’s Honey Savior with eyeshadow or pigment. Honey Savior, itself, is really handy to have in your collection but most moisturizers will give you a similar effect.
