Tooth fairies are not born.
They are not made.
They simply… are.
Like the Phoenix, they burst from their ashes into new versions of their former selves.
Why do you think they harvest teeth from the mouths of babes?
They say a child’s laughter is magic, and that laughter passes right through their teeth. It absorbs the magic, you see.
As they age, these fairies cocoon themselves in a casing of teeth and what almost can be described as magical essence.
It is a rare sight as every child knows not to look at the tooth fairy when she comes to collect her due.
… and those that do look upon the fairies are never seen from again.
Old tooth fairies are not even passing thoughts of their once former beauty.
… once reborn, when the fairy collects their first tooth, again, the cycle begins anew.
Their beauty begins to fade… and the horrors begin to grow.
This is the way it was and forever shall be.
… and no one knows why.
Okay, so the little made-up lore I just told you might sound silly and a little disjointed but I thought it would be a cool concept behind this makeup look. Sure, there have been “tooth fairies” with teeth glued to their faces, but what is THEIR story. Why the teeth, etc.?
I also wanted this fairy to have an aspect of beauty to her still as well, as she is still young in her cyclical life. I wish I would have spent more time on making the prosthetic look a bit more “apart” of her face but oh well. We live and we learn.
To make the prosthetic, I made my own SFX gelatine – you could use silicone or liquid latex but A) I didn’t want to waste my silicone (because it’s expensive) and B) because I’m allergic to latex so that option is right out the window. After I had melted down the gelatin cubes, I added a teaspoon of Concrete Mineral’s Pro Matte Eyeshadow in Bruise as a base before adding just a touch of Make Up Geek’s duochrome pigment in Sugar Rush to add a little life and color shift to the material.
To sculpt the piece, I took my facecast and slowly started to drizzle the mixture over the area where I wanted it, shaping it and moving it around with a popsicle stick until the mixture cooled down enough to begin to get stringy and set up. I then took those lovely fake teeth crowns and smooshed them into the gelatin mask. If you want this mask to stay together – I recommend gluing the teeth in and not just relying on the gelatin to hold them in place.
Removal from my face cast took some time as I had to take my trusty Dermablend Translucent Setting Powder and slowly brush it on the bottom of the mask to help separate it from the mold and help to keep the gelatin from sticking to itself. Since I didn’t glue the teeth down, if I flexed the gelatin mask too much the teeth would pop out… oops.
If you would like me to start an SFX 101 series on YouTube or something, let me know in the comments.
The “pretty” side of this makeup is relatively basic for a metallic-ish smokey eye. I don’t use cool tones very often but find that they look okay when I am rocking very pale blonde or silver hair. Heh. Speaking of blonde hair, is it just me or do I look rather odd with blonde hair?
A note from Chaos:
I can’t believe tomorrow is HALLOWEEN. I’m going to attempt to get one last tutorial in before noon tomorrow, but we will see. I’ve got to go to the doctor tomorrow as well, so my timetable is a little scrunched. Officially, as of this look – there have been 11 tutorials in 10 videos. I’m going to try hard to make it to that magic 13, but we will see. OH, and there’s a blooper video that will go up either tomorrow night or November 1st – it depends on if I can film and edit the footage of the other tutorials before I have to go to the hospital.
This series has rekindled my love for making more … hmm… gory or spooky characters and I think that I would like to continue to create content like this – not just for Halloween. What do you think? Maybe once or twice a month?
This little series has also tried my patience something awful because of everything that seemed to go wrong. Between family emergencies, my grandmother’s funeral, prop difficulties, computer crashes, chronic illness crap, delayed packages, and random power outages… I’m glad that I don’t have much hair to pull out because damn. That old adage “if it can go wrong, it will go wrong” holds very true for me right now – but that’s okay. I am trying to stay positive through all of this, and it’s somewhat working although my stress levels are through the roof.
Everything is a learning experience in my book. It’s not a happy learning experience, but it’s a learning experience AND I’ve officially beat my 2016 13DoH! At least there’s that! Ha.
Also, I would like just to take a brief moment and say thank you to everyone who has been kind enough to send supporting words of encouragement, sharing my looks on your social media pages, or just being there when I need to vent about my computer going to shit. You guys made this 13DoH2k18 better than I ever could…. so thank you from the heart of my evil little soul.
See you tomorrow for the 13DoH finale!
