In this episode of what’s in the Influenster VoxBox, we are discussing all the new goodies from Kat Von D and her #LockItRevolution.
The #LockItRevolution VoxBox launched back in July and for the first while, I thought that I wasn’t going to be in the campaign. For this specific VoxBox, it appears that Influenster sent out two batches of this campaign. It was a very happy surprise, for sure! I had just finished up my Marc Jacobs’ Glow Stick Highlighter VoxBox when I received the “YOU’RE IN EMAIL!” Oh, happy day! For those of you who do not know, I am a HUGE fan of Kat Von D Beauty – it’s right up there with Sugarpill, MUFE, and Melt Cosmetics. Add to that that when KVD initially announced her new line of products, I was salivating… especially after every time I’d see an Influencer that I follow on Social Media unbox the KVD Beauty PR packages.
Let’s get on to the good stuff…
Included in the VoxBox was the Lock-It Setting Powder, two shades of the new Lock-It Concealer Creme, the Lock-It Setting Powder Brush, and lastly, the Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush. So, without any further blabbing… let me get into the nitty-gritty with these products.
LOCK-IT SETTING POWDER:
The Lock-It Setting Powder in “Universal” retails for $30 USD / 0.67oz of product. “A weightless, translucent loose powder, formulated with Micro-Blurring Technology™, to set and perfect for a flawless, locked-in finish.” (via the KVD / Sephora websites)
Okay, so here’s a little preface to my review: I have dry, texturized skin – especially on my under-eyes and perimeter of my face. It’s pretty much a pain in the butt when it comes to setting powders and powder foundations. I have tried everything I can to make my skin look nice and supple when rocking anything powder foundation/setting powder … it all looks dry and crepey…. /sad panda.
PROS: The powder is very finely milled and gives a slight sheen, or luminosity, to the skin once applied. Packaging-wise, the pot is very sleek and comes with a star-shaped sifter. There is no scent to it, for those of you who are curious. Also, at least for fair foundations, this powder does not darken my light foundation.
CONS: The “universal” shade isn’t that universal if you have darker than a medium skin tone, it may look ashy. This powder is also lightly yellow/banana-toned, which is alright if you’re wanting to brighten/highlight but as an overall setting powder, the tint isn’t that great. Personally, this powder didn’t do anything for me under the eyes, but again, I always have a problem finding a good powder that won’t look crepe-y or show all of my under eye fine lines.
End Verdict: 2.5 / 10 The setting powder was a big miss for me. It was alright to lightly set my face, but I couldn’t go near my under-eyes… otherwise massive crepiness happens, and it’s not pretty.
LOCK-IT CONCEALER CREME:
The Lock-It Concealer Creme retails for $26 USD for 0.22oz of product. “A super-versatile, rich and creamy concealer with 24-hour wear and instant full coverage.”
I was sent two shades: Light 3 (warm) and Light 5 (neutral). For those who are curious, foundation-wise, I am generally the shades Light 44 in the summer and Light 44 + Light 42 in the winter. Light 5 is a dead match for the KVD Beauty Light 44 Lock-It Foundation, and Light 3 is a match for Light 45 Lock-it Foundation – since both are warm undertoned.
PROS: The concealers are very creamy, easy to blend out, and opaque. I appreciate that there is a diverse shade range including a straight up WHITE concealer color (which I purchased separately because I thought it was THAT awesome). The concealer didn’t oxidize at all, which is an added bonus. I like to wear this without setting it because it does set w/o powder after a little bit, which is great.
CONS: While it totes that this concealer is “crease-proof,” I currently have not found that to be true. It helps if you apply it with a light hand because a little bit goes a long way.
End Verdict: 9/10 I like this concealer. So much so, that I went and purchased the white shade! That says a lot, folks. And I cannot wait to use the white concealer for some upcoming Halloween tutorials.
Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush & Lock-It Setting Powder Brush:
The Lock-It Edge Concealer Brush retails for $24 USD. “A high-performance concealer brush with an exclusive sculpted shape to seamlessly blend under eye concealer and instantly cover blemishes.”
The Lock-It Setting Powder Brush retails for $38 USD. “An ultimate loose powder brush for setting and perfecting the entire face.”
Alright, so this is an interesting brush design – and definitely catches my eye. Specs-wise the whole brush handle is black with silver KVD branding. The end of the brush, like all of the other Lock-It Brushes are very “buffy-the-vampire-stake-like” which while cool looking… can be kind of a little cumbersome. The weight distribution is a bit off, which isn’t as noticeable with the Edge brush, but the Setting Powder brush is very top heavy. These brushes are a little longer than your average brush size.
Edge Brush: This brush is designed to help apply and blend out concealer around the under-eye and around the nose. While this is does do a decent job for that, I still prefer to use a beauty sponge. However, I do really love to use this for blending out eyeshadows on the lower lash line and occasionally using it snatch the nose. END VERDICT: 8/10
Setting Powder Brush: The bristles on this brush are super soft… like CHINCHILLA LEVEL SOFT. While not super densly packed it does do an excellent job with softly applying powder products. I have found that this brush kinda sheds on me a little, but new brushes do that from time to time. I just didn’t’ expect to have that issue with a high-end brush, like this one. This brush does a good job at applying the Setting Powder, but I have found that I LOVE to use it, instead, with my bronzer or contour colors… or heck, even blush. END VERDICT: 6/10
All in all, I am very happy to have had the ability to try out these products… especially since I would have purchased the concealers, Edge Brush, and setting powder to try out anyways. So, Influenster… my wallet salutes you with gusto! The highlights, for me, in this box were definitely the Lock-It Concealer Creme and Edge Brush while the Setting Powder and Setting Powder Brush were a bit of a miss for me.
OH! In other exciting things concerning this VoxBox Campaign, Influenster held another Instagram Party for the KVD goodies and guess what… I WON!!! There were three prompts for pictures, and then they picked a wild card winner, and I was the wild card winner. The prize was an auto-qualification into another upcoming prestige VoxBox Campaign, TBD.
