When Bram Stoker’s Dracula (film) came out, I was a toddler. Heh, 1992 was a long time ago! I watched the movie for the first time during a middle school sleepover, and I had to pinky promise that I wasn’t going to tell my parents that’s what we watched. Let’s just say tweenaged Chaos and some stirring feelings about Prince Vlad. Ahhh, he was one of my first cinema crushes – it was those eyes… yep.
Anyways – with Halloween upon us, it only fits to do some kind of inspired makeup look from the film. I’ve seen dozens of Lucy recreations, and even more, Dracula looks… but not many Mina Harker looks.
Given that I get the “YOU LOOK LIKE WINONA RYDER” comment a lot I figured I would play that up and do my version of Mrs. Harker. I choose one scene in particular and absolutely adore the music for that scene… well, I love the music for the entire score EXCEPT for that weird pop-love song that plays during the credits… but that’s beside the point.
Mina Harker in the movie isn’t as complicated or complex as she is in the novel, but she is my second favorite character from the film and one of my favorite supporting character roles in the Horror genre.
For this look, like most cinema “lady laying in bed” scenes – she’s rocking some no-makeup makeup and has quite a flush to her face… for obvious reasons. Tee Hee. She is wearing a simple victorian nightgown, and her hair is half up and half down (although the continuity for her hair is laughable in the film, just watch it, and you’ll know what I mean).

If you haven’t watched the movie yet and don’t want spoilers – then stop right here, go over to Amazon and watch it. It’s an amazing and beautiful work of cinematography… and it’s a Halloween classic.

Are we all good and ready to go on? Excellent!
The scene that I am referencing for this look is the one where she’s laying in bed at the institution while the menfolk are over at Carfax Abbey destroying all of Dracula’s boxes of earth (so that he has nowhere to retreat to if he escapes). There’s some green fog (Dracula, in effervescent form or fart form, obviously. Ha!) and she starts dreaming about the time she spent with him… and other, ermh, mature thoughts.
… and then, POOF, her prince is there.
It’s a scene that will tug on your heart strings a bit but in the end – Dracula is convinced that Mina wants to be with him and then he turns her. Just remember folks, THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE.
Enter Wilimina Harker, fledgeling vampire.
I knew for this look I wanted to stay as close to the source material as possible. I sculpted and cast silicone vampire bites, whipped out some Melt Cosmetics goodies and went on my spooky way.
Aside from the whole “you’ve got holes in your neck, blood coming out of them, and you just had some Dracula blood” this look is pretty natural and wearable. Right?
Random Thought: Why does Dracula always appear in the film via green fog… did he have a bad person for dinner or something? Is he all bloated and out of Bean-o? What are your thoughts?
