A few days ago, Chelsea – of @chaotikperspektive, on IG – asked for a random color combination for a makeup look. I gave her teal, sandy brown, and yellow. And she created her look (see it here). She then challenged me to a color palette – which I happily accepted because I like color challenges and want people to challenge me with color combos more often. *HINT HINT CHALLENGE ME, DAHLINGS!*
The challenge colors were: pink, mustard, orange, and warm brown.
First, like most looks that have interesting color combinations, I tend to plan out my looks using my iPad and my face chart app. This helps me to get an idea of the look without sitting down (sans-ideas) and wasting spoons on a look that either didn’t work out or partial looks that fail epicly – which happens. I doodled the look (pictured below) and all that was left was to give my self time to build up the spoons to do the look.
Last night, with spoons saved up, I decided to go live on Instagram and put this makeup on. I don’t go on IG live very often, mostly because I don’t really get a whole lot of interaction and tend to only have 2 or 3 consistent viewers in the live-stream with me. Now, don’t get me wrong – I value the crap outta those folks, but I feel awkward and there isn’t a whole lot of conversation going on which… makes me nervous. Heh. Me? Nervous? Yep, it happens.
That being said, it was fun to hang out with folks and shoot the shit, especially about the new Dragon Age 4 teaser that was released last week. Haven’t seen it? WATCH IT HERE. It’s just a teaser so it’s vague but OMG I want to play it so bad. It helped that during the live stream I was playing the soundtrack to DA:I in the background. I don’t know about you but I love video game soundtracks. As a whole, the fantasy/D&D type games – including Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Shadow of Mordor, WoW, etc have wonderfully scored orchestral soundtracks which I am a HUGE fan of. I also adore the Halo soundtracks, because DUH!
Between the wig that I chose – my (discontinued) Pose Wig in LLMER10 – and my tacky, yet awesome bright tweed blazer I found at Goodwill – I was definitely channeling my inner news person. Hence the title of this blog post.
Pink is a color that I tend to avoid. It’s not that it’s a bad color – I just have an aversion to pink ever since I was little. I was and still am a tomboy and used to have pink SHOVED DOWN MY THROAT when I was younger. I have pink eyeshadows, lipsticks, and yes… even a few articles of clothing. And yet, I still don’t use or wear that feminine shade unless I have too. It’s weird, I know. And yes, I know it’s JUST A COLOR… but still. Old habits die hard.
When it comes to makeup, pink shades tend to be heavy on staining the skin – and that’s also something that I take into account. Thankfully, this look did not stain my lids. HUZZAH!
Is there a color out there that you tend to avoid? Or pattern?

As I was going through my photos of this look I came across one and I was like DAAAAAAAYYYYUUUUMMMM, I didn’t know I was secretly Keira Knightley. Hahaha. Seriously. It always quasi-weirds me out when I look at photos and am like “whoa, I don’t look like my self.” As a cosplayer, it also sparks inspiration for future cosplays.
I’m going to chalk up the look-a-like factor to the wig, swoopy side bangs, and “model pose” — or whatever that means. Heh! What do you think? See the photo below if I’m Knightley enough…

I had fun watching you do the look…what face chart app do you use?
Yep yep yep, I’m so happy you were there to hang out for a bit. I use an app called Glamzy2 – but be aware it’s a little wonky, doesn’t update with new products (we’re talking old or outdated products) – and all of the brands that you use are in-app purchases, which all told is about $15 bucks to unlock everything and there isn’t any ways to customize colors. It’s somewhat restrictive but it’s good for a quick workaround. Once I get a certain look sketched out, I export it to Procreate to adjust or add certain effects or colors. I also sometimes just use procreate because I can customize colors and have brushes and face templates that I’ve made to help as well.
Good to know. Color is the primary reason I’d use it. I’ll look at it. I always enjoy hanging out on your IG streams. I’ve actually been planning on looking at different ways I could possibly host virtual knit alongs so hearing your feedback on how you feel about iG streams is good. Btw I’m glad you had spoons!
Honestly, it makes symmetry fairly easy with the mirror function – BUT if you have a specific color you want, if you can’t find it in the available products – you’re plum outta luck. <3 Knit-alongs are fun, I think something like Twitch might be a better platform to do that because you can embed so many different customizations and options for tips and such. I've been thinking about going over to twitch, too. The only thing with IG streaming is the fact that it alerts your followers (SOMETIMES) and it can be saved to your profile for 24 hours if you so choose.
I am on twitch – I occasionally stream board games for folks. But I don’t have a camera set up for the computer and it’s kinda confusing on how to stream that way. I’m usually streaming from my phone or the ps4. But I’m good going to give the computer another shot at some point.
I highly recommend just grabbing a 1080p webcam and plugging it in. It is very twitch friendly. We grabbed a nice Logitech one when the Office Max near us was going out of business.
Thank you for the recommendation. I’m hoping to add this as a feature if I get things worked out, for folks that want to attend my Saturday in the studio meetups but live to far away.
OOOH! I hope it works out and helps boost your signal one way or another!
😁 let me know if I can do anything to help boost your signal if you want. I try to support fellow creatives as much as I can any way that I can.
