Matte, grungy eyeshadows? Yes, please!
A couple of months ago, Saucebox Cosmetics released a four-pan eyeshadow set called Equinox. It caught my eye and Gollum’s voice in my head was all like …. myyy preciooooooous – but I held off. I know, I’m growing as a human. It wasn’t until they had a sale for another palette, their classic Etude palette, that I decided to double down and take the plunge. The colors looked like ones that I don’t have exact dupes for, and my Saucebox Cosmetics eyeshadow collection grew a bit bigger that day.
When I think of grungy eyeshadow colors – blues and blood oranges don’t come up as glaringly apparent colors. Except they work. This quad was an homage to Saucebox’s roots of being “unique, original, with a splash of attitude.”I ordered it at the around the first of June, and within a week there was a beautiful package on my stoop. My order arrived safe and sound except for one little whoops which contained a duplicate of the Daffodil eyeshadow and no Moth. With that, I reached out to their customer service, via the contact page on their website followed up by an email directly a few days earlier after no replay to the first. Still silence for two weeks. Bummer. Having worked in CS before I am all too well familiar with the internet gobbling up emails, so I did the next best thing, I hit them up on social media.
Within 15 minutes someone on their social media team had replied to me, apologized for the mixup and radio silence, and informed me that the correct eyeshadow would ship out the following morning – which it did. I received it two days later. When in doubt, reach out on social media – politely – if you have customer service issues that don’t get resolved via email.
By the way, I want to thank whoever handles their IG social media account because they were so friggin courteous and kind. They answered my quandary right away and provided a snappy solution! So, thank you!

Right off of the bat, the color palette of this set is exciting. I would never put a robins’ egg-ish blue with a rusty orange shade AND a warm grey. The mustard shade, daffodil, is right up my alley, so that was what sold me over on the palette in the first place… Me. Like a grungy mustard shade… Nah. HA!
The shades arrive individually packaged in Saucebox’s blue cardboard sleeve, safely nestled in a plastic clamshell.
One of the things that I like about Saucebox Cosmetics is their matte eyeshadow formula – and this set does not disappoint.
Daffodil: described as “a timeless mustard color perfectly complimenting every skin tone.” This shade truly is beautiful and is great for an all over the lid color as it blends out to a perfect khaki color. Swatched on bare skin, this color does take a few passes to build up, but if you apply it with a primer, it shows up wonderfully. (… and it shouldn’t surprise you that this shade is my favorite out of the quad.)
Close but not quite dupes: ABH Edge (from Subculture), Limecrime Mustard (from Venus II), Devinah Cosmetics Darena (Midnight Affairs Collection) and Morphe Grungey Yellow (From 35O).
Roxanne: described as “a blood orange sure to get you noticed.” This color looks a lot redder and brighter in the pan, but once you apply it it is a pure blood orange. Like Daffodil, this shade is pretty by itself, but it works exceptionally well when paired with Daffodil making a picture-perfect warm eye look.
Roxanne always reminds me of the scene and song in Moulin Rouge, and I can’t help but read the name of this shadow and in my head go “Roooooooxxxxxxaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeee.”
Close but not quite dupes: MAC Red Brick (single), MUFE M738 (single), and Devinah Cosmetics Runa (Midnight Affairs Collection)
Sea Glass: Described as “a unique blue-grey-green magical mix.” To me, this shade screams dusty, robins egg blue with a grey undertone. I don’t quite see where the green in the description comes to play, but regardless, it is a very unique and pretty color. When swatching, this shade was the patchiest out of the bunch – but that’s almost expected as blues, especially with grey bases can be finicky and patchy just because of the white needed for the formula. If you apply Sea Glass over a sticky base or primer, the pigmentation pops and looks quite bright.
Moth: Described as “a deliciously cool grey.” Moth is a very interesting grey. When I swatched it over bare skin on my arm, it pulled warm along the edges yet when applied it over a primer on my lids it was quite cool. This shade is the softest out of the bunch so keep that in mind when dipping in with your brush as you’ll probably get more kick up than expected. I really enjoy this shade right along the lash line, and it pairs exquisitely with Sea Glass.
Close but not quite Dupes: MUFE M106 (single), MAC Print (single), and KVD Beauty Dagger (Pastel Goth)
Overall, for the price and for the colors’ payoff and theme – this is an excellent set. To me, it seems that the blue and grey are set up to go together, like the mustard and blood orange shades – or use all four in various setups or each just by themselves. BE aware that Sea Glass is pretty finicky as you can see and needs a little help to blend out or into the other colors of this set.
I came up with two looks using both colors, below. I love how the look on the right turned out, so much so that I may do a YouTube tutorial for a whole look. Would you be interested in that? Let me know in the comments.
I am delighted that I picked up this set and I do feel that it was worth the wait. If you are interested in even two of these colors, pick up the whole set because you’ll get four eyeshadows for the price of 2 individual eyeshadows if purchased separately.
So, with all that said – congrats on making it to the end of this blog post. /muwah!
I want to know if you’ve already picked up this quad or are interested. I don’t know if this set is limited edition, so if you haven’t already picked it up and want it – don’t wait too long.

Ok I’m sold. Those colors are amaze balls.
They really are gorgeous and you can’t beat the price. The only one that I’m not completely sold on is Sea Glass, but it’s workable if you give it a little extra blending time. Let me know what you think when you get yours. 🙂
